From Captain to Cadet: Merchant Navy Rank Guide

The highest-ranking officer. Commands the entire ship and is responsible for safety, navigation, cargo, and crew.

Captain (Master)

Second-in-command. Manages cargo loading/unloading, ship stability, and leads the deck crew.

Chief Officer (1st Mate)

The navigation expert. Plans routes, maintains charts, and handles bridge watch duties.

Second Officer (2nd Mate)

Takes care of all life-saving and firefighting equipment onboard and assists in navigation.

Third Officer (3rd Mate)

Trainee officer learning navigation, safety, and cargo operations under senior officers.

Deck Cadet

Head of the Engine Department. Maintains all technical operations and machinery onboard.

Chief Engineer

Supervises day-to-day engine room tasks and ensures smooth functioning of the main engine.

Second Engineer

Handle auxiliary machines, purifiers, compressors, and assist with machinery upkeep.

Third & Fourth Engineers

Learns the practical side of marine engineering under guidance from senior engineers.

Engine Cadet

 Bosun, AB, OS: Deck operations, mooring,  maintenance  Fitter, Oiler, Wiper: Engine support &  mechanical repairs  Cook & Steward: Prepare meals, manage  cleanliness, and ensure crew comfort
